The implementation of ethical and sustainable cetacean tourism in French Polynesia.
It had been a while since many of you encouraged us to display new information and awareness panels about the dolphins of Rangiroa. Our program left us little time to get to it, but here they are at last, initially in French and English! The objective of these panels is to briefly present the dolphins of Tiputa and the local context of marine wildlife observation.
For this project, we are happy to have been able to benefit from the support of our eco-volunteers for the writing, proofreading, and translation of the texts, as well as their advice on the composition of the panels! Thanks also to the Rangiroa Diving Center, which allows us to use a nice location within its center for their display!
The dolphin gallery
In order to promote the sharing of information about the bottlenose dolphins of the Tiputa area, the association 'Dauphins de Rangiroa' has started distributing the photo directory of the bottlenose dolphins of Tiputa to various local tourism-related structures - dive centers, guesthouses, tourism committee, etc. This poster illustrates the silhouettes of the dorsal fins of the dolphins belonging to the Tiputa community, their sex, and the name given to them in our catalogs. Even if other morphological, pigmentation, and behavioral criteria can help us recognize individuals, it is the most universal way to identify dolphins.
It's here, the new identification catalogue of the dolphins of Rangiroa, which we call the photo directory, has arrived! Large format, weather-resistant, detachable pages and photos: this will make the work of our volunteers easier! :-)
Book a talk
Every Sunday, by prior booking, the association runs a talk called “A short history of the bottlenose dolphins of Rangiroa”, where we answer the many questions people ask about the dolphins. How many are there? Why are they so at ease around humans? Does that familiarity carry risks? And so on.
